GUNFACTOR#
Interaction hypothesis for a deliberately false metric — 31 August 2026
Premise#
GUNFACTOR looks like a measure of how readily a person or institution might decide that someone deserves an opportunity. It records nothing about the artist or work.
The field borrows the confidence of institutional scoring to expose a familiar substitution: personal appeal, social fluency, proximity, and discretionary approval are allowed to influence allocation, then the result is described as merit.
GUNFACTOR is not a joke attached to the critique. Its useless operation is the critique.
Public form#
The field appears as ordinary work metadata:
ARTIST PAID YES
FOLLOWERS NOT COLLECTED
GUNFACTOR 73.2 [EDIT] [?]
STATUS CIRCULATING
The value is confidently precise and unsupported by a scale, unit, source,
trend, or methodology. Its [?] control may offer an assigned explanation that
sounds authoritative while supplying another arbitrary basis. The explanation
does not decode the joke or establish a true methodology.
Editing hypothesis#
Anyone may edit the publicly displayed GUNFACTOR without an account.
The interaction proceeds as follows:
GUNFACTOR 73.2 [EDIT]
↓
NEW VALUE ______ [SUBMIT]
↓
ADJUSTMENT PROCESSED
GUNFACTOR 18.7 [EDIT]
On submission:
- The attempted value is discarded.
- The system assigns a new random GUNFACTOR unrelated to the submitted value.
- The new value becomes the shared public value for that work.
- The interface returns to its neutral administrative state.
The internal shorthand is that the person's attempt to adjust the value is consumed and laughed at by the machine. The public interface does not say this. Its calm confirmation and unrelated result perform the laugh.
Explanations and mistranslation#
GUNFACTOR may carry a small secret through its [?]
control. Different works or edition states may receive different explanations:
Exact berekend. Nergens op gebaseerd.
Determined by the number of selfies taken in front of Banksy works.
Based on peer review. Peers unavailable.
Includes a 14% pedigree correction.
Recalculated whenever someone says “emerging artist.”
Verified by three people carrying tote bags.
Confidence: institutional. Evidence: pending.
The methodology was misplaced during calibration.
An explanation is assigned to the work or edition state. It does not reroll on hover, focus, refresh, or repeated opening. Variation should be encountered across the system or over edition time rather than farmed through interaction.
Some explanations may contain one further reveal:
Exact berekend. Nergens op gebaseerd. [TRANSLATE]
[TRANSLATE] does not provide a concise translation. It expands the sentence
into excessive official English:
OFFICIAL ENGLISH TRANSLATION
This figure has been established through a context-sensitive evaluation
process incorporating available qualitative indicators, unavailable
quantitative indicators, prevailing atmospheric conditions, and such
additional considerations as the calculating authority may from time to time
consider relevant. It is supplied for orientation only and should not be
understood as accurate, inaccurate, reproducible, meaningful, or based on
anything in particular.
The translation is stable after reveal. It does not become longer through repeated presses. The Dutch line, GUNFACTOR label, and translation mechanism form one bounded language intervention; no additional Dutch gallery copy should compete with it on that page.
The tone is elaborate machinery delivered through calm administrative UI. The system does not announce that it is being funny.
Why the edit matters#
The button offers the familiar promise that participation will produce agency. The system accepts the labor, performs a process, and returns another arbitrary decision.
Allowing anyone to edit the field also removes any credible owner of the number. It remains public and consequential-looking while being authored by no one and responsive to nothing.
The mechanic should create a short moment of recognition, not an engagement loop.
Invariants#
- The value is never derived from follower count, sales, biography, traffic, host activity, visitor input, or artist behavior.
- The submitted value is not retained as content or training data.
- Explanations and translations never affect the displayed value.
- GUNFACTOR never affects selection, payment, circulation, placement, order, access, recommendation, or visibility.
- Works cannot be ranked, sorted, filtered, compared, or searched by it.
- No person receives a GUNFACTOR.
- There is no history, high score, average, change graph, leaderboard, or public edit count.
- There is no explanation index, discovery count, completion state, or record of who opened or translated one.
- Edits are not attributed and cannot be shared as achievements.
- Rate limiting may protect the service, but must not become identity, reputation, or a participation allowance.
- The field appears at most once on a work page and uses the page's one Dutch intervention budget.
Tone and behavior#
- Use
[EDIT], not a playful call to action. - Use a plain input rather than a slider, dial, reaction, or game control.
- Confirm processing in administrative language.
- Replace the number directly; avoid celebration, shaking, slot-machine motion, sound, confetti, or a comedic error state.
- Do not make repeated pressing sensorially rewarding.
- Do not explain why the submitted value was ignored.
The machine is funniest when it appears to believe its process is entirely reasonable.
Data posture#
An implementation should store only the current random value and the minimum technical state required to operate and protect the shared field. The attempted value should disappear at submission. No visitor profile, public attribution, or behavioral inference is created.
Security logs, retention, and rate limiting require an explicit implementation decision before release. They cannot quietly become another source of audience measurement.
Failure conditions#
Remove or redesign the interaction if:
- it becomes the thing people remember instead of the work or allocation structure;
- people treat it as a game to optimize;
- artists experience the number as an evaluation despite its arbitrariness;
- the edit creates traffic, repeat-use, or share incentives;
- explaining the device becomes necessary for it to land;
- repeated opening, editing, or refreshing becomes the way to collect its explanations;
- its technical operation collects more behavioral data than its critique can justify;
- the joke becomes a substitute for actually refusing proxy-based allocation.
Questions for the next presentation pass#
- Is a decimal number more convincingly institutional than an amount of money?
- Should the generated range remain plausible, or occasionally expose its nonsense through impossible values?
- Does the global shared value create the right relation, or does it invite button-spamming?
- What minimum confirmation makes the consumed input legible without explaining the joke?
- Can an artist opt out of the field without being asked to understand or endorse the device?
