Vibe fields#

How Karlie defines, refines, and creates the experiential field of a room or project

Working meaning#

A vibe field is the felt relation among art, furniture, objects, light, color, material, space, memory, use, and people.

It is not a shopping list, style label, mood-board aesthetic, or optimization target. The practice begins with a question such as: What should this room feel capable of, and how do I recognize, refine, and create that feeling?

This notebook can include interior work and other creative endeavors where Karlie used a similar process of sensing, naming, collecting, rejecting, arranging, and revising.

Karlie's account of the practice#

How a desired field begins#

Does it begin with a feeling, tension, object, constraint, reference, use, person, or something else?

How it becomes legible#

How are words, images, references, conversations, or examples used without reducing the field to a style category?

How it is composed#

How do individual choices affect one another? What creates coherence, productive tension, or surprise?

How it changes through use#

What becomes visible only after people live in the result?

Result through use

What changed once people inhabited or encountered it?

Agent synthesis — draft for Karlie's review

The interior work began with a desired feeling rather than a shopping list. Art, furniture, light, color, material, scale, and daily use were considered as a single field. The process became more legible by naming roles—anchor, stabilizer, bridge, tension piece, and interruption—and by testing how each work changed the room around it.

The decisions evolved through comparison and restraint. A large green painting could become the atmospheric anchor; smaller personal works needed their own composition rather than clinging to it; a textile could add graphic color to the kitchen, but only one was needed. Placement was judged in relation to sofas, consoles, speakers, chairs, ceiling height, and sightlines rather than wall space alone.

The useful pattern for MOOI NIET. is that coherence did not mean matching everything. It came from distributing different kinds of energy across the home, allowing asymmetry and tension, and revising the composition as the lived context became clearer.

Project: The interior vibe-field system itself#

Known facts

Desired field

The system names four overlapping energies rather than assigning each room one fixed style: Warm Eclectic Studio, Graphic Modern Heritage, Architectural Mischief, and Lived-In Rustic Modern.

How it became legible

The fields were described through core energy, materials, colors, objects, use cases, and guardrails. This made an intuitive spatial atmosphere discussable without reducing it to a shopping list or a single aesthetic label.

How it was composed

The larger home direction combined warmth first, contrast second, art-led zones, intentional density, and collecting over time. The image-classification method then tested new references against the existing fields using concrete observations about materials, color, scale, spatial context, and fit.

How it changed through use

The session notes show the system being revised as the catalogue changed: the active living-room anchor changed, fixed placements were clarified, the studio became a studio/guest-room hybrid, and bathrooms were recognized as suitable for smaller stranger works.

Relation to MOOI NIET.

Agent synthesis: A field can function as a provisional language for attention. It helps someone compare and compose without requiring the language to become a permanent classification system.

Unknowns

The available files document planning and revision, but do not yet provide a sustained post-installation account of how the completed rooms felt through extended use.

Concrete projects#

Project: New-flat art field#

Known facts

Desired field

An open-plan home that could hold atmospheric depth, graphic tension, warmth, and intimate work without becoming cluttered or thematic.

Starting conditions

The work had to relate to a floating sofa, a future record-player wall, a connected kitchen, standard-height ceilings, honeyed bamboo, stainless steel, Thonet chairs, and existing furniture.

References and language

The planning vocabulary included anchor, stabilizer, bridge, tension piece, interruption, negative space, and visual horizon.

Composition and iteration

The large green painting moved toward the wall facing the floating sofa. Smaller works were separated into their own grouping. One textile was considered sufficient for the kitchen, with a slim black frame to connect it to other metal elements.

Relation to MOOI NIET.

Agent synthesis: A room can be treated as a living field whose character emerges from relationships among works, objects, use, and time—not from selecting a single style label.

Unknowns

The available source describes planning and proposed placement, not the completed room or its later revision.

Project: Listening vignette above the record console#

Known facts

Desired field

A relaxed listening zone in which the console and its objects—not one dramatic painting—carry the main weight.

Composition and iteration

The proposed horizontal artwork was centered on the console, with the speaker treated as offset punctuation. This replaced the earlier idea of making a tall painting the dominant anchor.

Taste revealed

Agent synthesis: Changing the desired experience from “art wall” to “listening vignette” changed the appropriate artwork format, scale, and hierarchy.

Unknowns

The source does not establish the final artwork selected or installed.
