MOOI NIET. edition system#
Working model for special-edition presentation — 1 September 2026
Position#
For the future presentation and circulation of artists and works, the primary unit is an edition—not a work page, artist profile, content feed, or generic collection wearing a new theme. The current public corpus is the project's working account; it is not an edition and should not simulate one.
MOOI NIET. behaves as the imprint. Each edition is a complete authored world: selected artists and works, proposition, operating score, duration, circulation, visual identity, physical or digital mechanisms, permissions, release pattern, and afterlife.
A collection is the curatorial relation among artists, works, questions, and refusals. An edition is the bounded public and operational form through which that collection is presented and circulated. The distinction matters: the collection explains why the works belong together; the edition authors how that relation becomes encounterable now.
Edition does not mean artificial scarcity, speculative collectibility, numbering for status, or a product drop.
Stable MOOI NIET. layer#
Every edition inherits a small set of non-negotiable relations:
- artist authorship remains distinct from gallery interpretation and host response;
- artists are paid according to declared terms;
- money, gallery labor, and purchase terms remain legible;
- work-specific terms for custody, use, movement, publication, sale, recall, and exit are known before release;
- hosts receive clear care, cost, duration, privacy, and consent conditions;
- stewardship does not require public performance or content production;
- authorship remains distinct across artist, gallery, host, fact, and generated material;
- popularity, wealth, pedigree, cultural fluency, and interior polish do not determine artistic support or access;
- necessary information remains accessible even when the edition uses secrecy, delay, surprise, or unusual technology.
These guarantees do not promise artist control over reception after release. The experience offered to the artists should be as carefully designed as the one offered to the hosts; an edition's terms and mechanics are creative material, not merely protection or fulfilment.
These are structural guarantees, not the edition's visual identity.
Edition variables#
Each edition may author its own:
- proposition and title;
- inclusion of artists and works;
- relationship among the works;
- choice, allocation, and sequencing rules;
- stay length, rotation, return, and closure;
- early departure, rerouting, and the treatment of a gap;
- host circle, anonymity, secrecy, and contribution;
- public and private release pattern;
- typography, colour, composition, navigation, and image behavior;
- physical, digital, ambient, or computational mechanism;
- latent, delayed, relayed, chance, perishable, or unresolved secrets;
- public reassembly, sale, dispersal, archive, disappearance, or other afterlife.
A successful mechanism does not become a permanent gallery-wide feature by default. Reuse requires a new reason inside a later edition.
Possible editions are developed as creative briefs in the edition backlog. The backlog is a shelf of hypotheses, not a programme announcement; each brief keeps its mechanics attached to the artists, works, and proposition that might justify them.
First host posture#
The initial default is deliberately unremarkable: first come first served. If a person wants an available work, accepts the monthly price and simple care conditions, and can return it in good shape, MOOI NIET. does not need another eligibility performance.
A host can select a work directly or opt into an edition score that authors the selection, sequence, and rotation. Later editions may use chance, a lottery, a reverse auction, an absurd auction, or another allocation mechanism when that rule adds to the proposition. The gallery should not build gatekeeping theatre for scarcity it does not have.
Working content model#
Edition#
The complete authored container:
proposition
score
visual identity
selected works
run
mechanism
release pattern
afterlife
Work#
The durable identity of the work and its artist-authorized factual record. A work is not exhausted by any edition in which it appears.
Appearance#
The relation between a work and a particular edition:
- why it was included;
- what it does in relation to other works;
- how it is presented here;
- which edition-specific mechanism touches it;
- what is revealed, withheld, changed, or preserved.
This prevents one permanent product page from flattening every context in which the work lives.
Run#
The edition's active duration and sequence of reveals, stays, rotations, reassemblies, and closure.
Stay#
A relation among work, host, place, and time, with declared care, privacy, contribution, and handoff conditions.
Mechanism#
An edition-specific rule enacted through physical, social, editorial, or technical means.
Trace#
Something produced or carried through the edition: a note, mark, choice, sound, state change, factual record, secret, or deliberate absence. Its audience, release, permission, and persistence are declared in the score.
Secret#
A deliberately incomplete relation among carrier, trigger, audience, time, and knowledge. It may be discovered or missed without changing anyone's rights, access, standing, or ability to understand the known container. Its structure is defined in the secret system.
Offer#
The work's direct availability for purchase, when applicable. It belongs to the separate WORKS/STORE surface and may link back to an edition appearance without turning that edition into a sales funnel.
Mechanics, not features#
NFC, microsites, e-ink displays, printed matter, sensors, and messages are materials. They become mechanics only when an edition gives them a consequential rule.
- NFC opening a standard work page is a feature.
- NFC revealing a different score-authorized fragment after each rotation is a mechanic.
- An e-ink label showing dimensions and price is signage.
- An e-ink label changing only at handoff and carrying something from the preceding stay participates in the edition.
- An ESP32-driven e-ink display changing weekly, randomly, with the room's light, or not at all becomes a mechanic when that behavior changes the work's encounter.
- A notes field is functionality.
- One optional note per stay, visible only to the next host and destroyed at closure, is a score.
The additive test is:
If removing it would not materially change the edition's relationships, sequence, or meaning, it is not a mechanic.
Novelty, retention, participation volume, and technical possibility are not sufficient reasons to include one.
Secrets use the same test. A concealed fragment is not automatically meaningful because it is hidden. It must alter an edition's tone, relation, timing, or possibility without becoming an Easter-egg inventory.
Lifecycle#
An edition can compose content across time rather than publishing a complete page at launch.
Before#
- proposition;
- known container and consent conditions;
- artist and work material that should precede encounter;
- cost, duration, care, privacy, and possible surprise.
During#
- physical encounter;
- timed or sought context;
- stays, rotations, state changes, and permitted traces;
- edition-scored secrets that may appear, transfer, expire, or go unseen;
- edition-specific digital or physical behavior.
At handoff or reassembly#
- material intended for the next host;
- delayed artist or gallery context;
- a changed mechanism state;
- factual movement without exposing private locations.
At closure#
- sale, return, dispersal, reassembly, or continued circulation;
- release, return, preservation, or destruction of traces;
- a digital fossil holding the minimal factual record and any permitted lasting enrichment;
- an edition-specific public artifact or deliberate disappearance.
A digital fossil should not flatten a closed edition into the same interface used while it was alive or claim to replay the host's experience. It keeps lasting provenance encounterable by owners, former hosts, guests, and later visitors while allowing private traces and secrets to disappear.
Example: a three-month relay#
One edition could declare:
STAY 3 months
ALLOCATION constrained random draw
ROTATION mandatory
HOST CHOICE join the edition, not choose the work
TRACE one optional note for the next host
PUBLICATION none during circulation
DIGITAL LAYER NFC opens the work's current edition state
FRAME DISPLAY e-ink changes only at handoff
CLOSURE works reassemble; notes return, reveal, or disappear
The random draw may respect physical suitability, safety, permissions, and care without introducing host wealth, status, interior polish, taste performance, or public visibility as advantages.
The note is not a comment. It has one author, one intended future reader, no reactions, no public profile, and an edition-defined death or afterlife. It is optional unless the known score explicitly makes another bounded contribution part of joining.
The NFC destination is not a general work profile. It is a time-aware surface for this appearance of the work. The e-ink display is not universal product hardware; it belongs only if its changing state matters to this relay.
This edition could also contain an unannounced e-ink change, an NFC fragment that exists for only one stay, or a message distributed across works that no host is promised enough information to complete. These are designed through a secret score rather than added as generic delight.
Surface hierarchy#
A future edition-era hierarchy to test, once real work and permissions exist, is:
MOOI NIET.
CURRENT EDITION
EDITIONS
WORKS / STORE
ARTISTS
MONEY
The shell stays visually and behaviorally thin. Entering the current edition means entering its own presentation system. One edition might organize itself around WORKS / ROUTE / HANDOFF; another may withhold navigation or reveal almost nothing at first.
The edition may change the room, but it must not hide the exits. A route back to the global shell, necessary terms, language and accessibility controls, and material conditions remains clear.
WORKS / STORE#
MOOI NIET. may also maintain a direct surface for works that can be bought. This is separate from the edition experience.
The public name remains open:
- WORKS keeps attention on the work and can include available and unavailable records, but must not obscure the transaction.
- STORE states the transaction plainly and refuses coy euphemism, but risks making the whole project read as retail.
There should be one destination, not a cultural WORKS section and a duplicated commerce catalogue behind STORE.
An available-work record may include:
- the work and artist;
- a truthful image or view;
- material and dimensions;
- availability;
- price or direct purchase terms;
- work-specific rights and sale conditions;
- its edition appearances, when relevant;
- any invitation to continue stewardship after purchase.
The surface does not use:
- popularity or sales ordering;
- behavioral recommendations or “similar works”;
- urgency, countdowns, artificial drops, or low-stock theater;
- likes, saves, social proof, or public demand;
- prestige treatment of sold status;
- styled interiors as conversion evidence;
- participation in an edition as pressure to buy.
Buying is an available relation, not the resolution every edition is designed to produce. A work may be bought without its price becoming the most important thing about it; an edition may close successfully without selling anything.
Calibration questions#
- Could this edition be replaced by generic inventory without losing anything?
- Is its identity generated by the proposition or merely applied to it?
- Does the mechanism alter a relationship, sequence, or meaning?
- What does the edition ask of artists and hosts, and who can refuse?
- Which parts must be known before joining, even when surprise is part of the form?
- Does the technology deepen the work or demonstrate the gallery's cleverness?
- What survives, who controls it, and what is allowed to disappear?
- Can a secret be missed without creating pressure to monitor, complete, or prove the experience?
- Does the store remain a direct service to works and artists, or has it become the hidden purpose of the edition?
